Nationally UK food and drink companies generate at least 10% (10 million tonnes) of the total waste produced by UK businesses.[1]
Within Yorkshire and Humber research has shown that over 62,000 tonnes of food and drink processors waste is being needlessly sent to landfill[2], hampered by both perceived and practical barriers to recycling faced by businesses, and in particular SME’s.
Recycling Action Yorkshire has developed a Food and Drink Waste Collections Project to support businesses in reducing their waste costs. The project has identified opportunities for recycling and energy recovery of food and drink wastes in the region and is establishing new sustainable collection schemes for this waste.
The Food and Drink Case Study highlights the benefits of waste minimisation and recycling to businesses and how these can be achieved.
